Water is needed to grow food. Today, the ditches on the Pueblo, which carry rain and snowmelt from the mountains, are often dry. The amount of water in the Rio Grande is less than it used to be. Sometimes, water pumps break and can’t be used to water plants.

The biggest effect of climate change is water. You don't have water, your soil dries out and then it doesn't become as nutritious as it was before. So then you begin with poor soil and then you top that off with less water to hydrate that soil. When you have crops in there, the underlying factor is water.

Weather patterns on the Pueblo are changing as a result of climate change. The weather today is different than in the past and doesn’t follow the patterns we are used to. Things like late freezes or early warm spells are more common and make it harder for crops to grow.

I accidentally planted apricots here near my house from seeds after I was eating apricots. This year we did not get apricots because they froze. Climate change is freezing trees.

Pueblo people traditionally knew when to plant and harvest depending on which birds and animals they would see and hear at different times of the year. For example, a farmer knows to plant their fields when they begin to see and hear the mockingbird. As a result of climate change, wildlife migration patterns are changing and some wildlife are no longer present. This means that Pueblo people may no longer know when to plant and harvest based on which birds and animals they see and hear.

Grandpa used to say that when you hear the frogs it is time to plant. When we were kids we could hear the frogs. You can't hear frogs anymore.
